Best Duo Leveling Combinations in WoW Forever
The WoW Forever class combinations we'd choose for leveling as a pair, from tank-healer duos to fast pet and hybrid combinations.
By TopBuilds Team
Leveling with a friend changes what makes a class good. Solo survivability matters less because one player can cover the other's weaknesses, and combinations with healing, tankiness, pets or complementary damage become much more attractive.
For WoW Forever, we'd prioritize a duo that can keep moving with little downtime, handle difficult quests and form the core of a dungeon group.
Our favorite all-round combinations are Warrior + Priest, Paladin + Mage, Hunter + Druid, Warlock + Priest and Shaman + Warrior.
These aren't hard rankings. Race, faction, professions and the roles you eventually want to play all matter, and beta tuning can still change before November 4.
Before you pick a pair
A few WoW Forever rules decide which duos are actually possible:
- Same faction. Horde and Alliance cannot group together. Not sure which side to pick? See Alliance vs Horde in WoW Forever.
- Same ruleset. Forever uses rulesets instead of realms (Normal, PvP and Roleplaying at launch, with Hardcore coming later), and you can only group with players on the same ruleset. Agree on your faction and ruleset before creating characters.
- New race and class combinations. Forever adds pairings that were not possible in Classic, including Undead Paladin, Dwarf Shaman, Human Hunter, Gnome Priest, Orc Mage and Troll Warlock. See all WoW Forever races and racials.
- Skyborne. The new Skyborne race cannot be Paladin, Priest or Warlock.
Quick picks
| Duo | Why it works |
|---|---|
| Warrior + Priest | Tanky front line plus healing and ranged support |
| Paladin + Mage | Durable melee plus ranged damage and control |
| Hunter + Druid | Pet tank plus healing and flexible roles |
| Warlock + Priest | Demon tank, DoTs, healing and ranged damage |
| Shaman + Warrior | Melee synergy, healing and utility |
| Rogue + Druid | Stealth-focused pair with healing and flexibility |
Warrior + Priest — classic tank and healer pair
This is one of the easiest combinations to understand.
The Warrior stays in front and turns incoming damage into Rage. The Priest keeps the Warrior alive and contributes ranged damage when healing isn't needed.
The biggest advantage appears when you want to run dungeons. You already have two of the most important group roles covered, so finding damage dealers is usually easier than building a group from scratch.
It's also a good answer to one of Warrior's solo weaknesses: recovery. Damage that would force a solo Warrior to stop can be healed by the Priest while you continue moving.
Plan the characters with the Warrior guide and Priest guide.
Best for: players who want to run plenty of dungeons while leveling.
Paladin + Mage — durability meets control
Paladin and Mage solve opposite problems.
The Paladin can stand in melee, survive mistakes and heal when necessary. The Mage brings ranged damage and control.
If enemies reach the Mage, the Paladin can keep pressure off them. If a pull gets dangerous, both classes have tools that can help stabilize the situation rather than simply racing to kill the target first.
This is also a nice combination if one player enjoys a slower, sturdy melee style while the other wants a more active ranged class.
On the Horde side, this pair is possible thanks to the new Undead Paladin and Orc Mage combinations.
See the Paladin guide and Mage guide.
Best for: a melee player and caster player leveling together.
Hunter + Druid — our flexible leveling duo
Hunter already has a tank: the pet. Adding a Druid gives the pair healing and much more role flexibility.
For normal questing, the Hunter and pet can handle much of the pressure while the Druid contributes damage. When something goes wrong, the Druid can heal. When you eventually enter group content, the Druid can move toward tanking, healing, melee or ranged gameplay depending on the build.
The combination is particularly attractive if neither player wants to commit to a traditional tank-and-healer setup for the entire leveling journey.

See the Hunter guide and Druid guide.
Best for: relaxed questing and players who want flexibility later.
Warlock + Priest — ranged sustain
Warlock provides a demon to occupy enemies while both players operate primarily from range. Priest adds the recovery that makes an already self-sufficient Warlock even harder to stop.
Damage-over-time spells also mean the pair can keep dealing damage while changing targets or responding to a messy pull.
The tradeoff is that you're not starting with a conventional tank class for dungeons. For open-world leveling, however, the demon can handle much of the work normal mobs would otherwise put on a player.
See the Warlock guide and Priest guide.
Best for: two players who prefer ranged combat.
Shaman + Warrior — melee with support
Shaman gives Warrior something it appreciates enormously while leveling: support without turning the second player into a dedicated healer.
The Shaman can contribute damage, heal when necessary and bring utility through its broader toolkit, while the Warrior provides the durable front line.
This combination also makes sense for players who want to transition naturally into dungeon groups.
Check your faction first: on the Alliance side, Shaman is a new option for Dwarves.
See the Shaman guide and Warrior guide.
Best for: players who want aggressive melee gameplay with healing available when needed.
Rogue + Druid — the stealth duo
This is the unusual pick.
Rogue and Druid can both approach the world differently from a traditional kill-everything pair. Stealth can help with positioning and reaching objectives, while Druid brings healing and the ability to switch roles.
It won't always be the fastest raw XP combination, but it can be one of the most entertaining if both players enjoy choosing their fights rather than charging through every camp.
See the Rogue guide and Druid guide.
Best for: players who value stealth and control over a conventional tank/healer setup.
Do you need a tank and healer to level together?
No.
Most questing doesn't require a formal tank and healer. Two damage-focused characters can kill enemies quickly enough that survivability never becomes a problem.
Tank/healer combinations become more valuable when you:
- fight elites,
- take difficult multi-mob pulls,
- run dungeons frequently,
- or want a group-ready pair without changing characters.
If you're mainly questing, pick classes you both enjoy first.
What about two Hunters or two Warlocks?
They're completely viable and can be extremely comfortable in the open world because pets add extra bodies to every fight.
The reason they aren't our first recommendation is flexibility. A Hunter + Druid or Warlock + Priest pair has more options when the content changes from normal questing to a difficult elite or dungeon.
Our picks by goal
| Goal | Duo |
|---|---|
| Dungeon leveling | Warrior + Priest |
| Relaxed questing | Hunter + Druid |
| Two ranged players | Warlock + Priest |
| Melee + caster | Paladin + Mage |
| Melee-focused pair | Warrior + Shaman |
| Stealth gameplay | Rogue + Druid |
Once you've picked your pair, check the leveling guide and dungeons by level so both characters stay on the same route.
You can also compare each class individually with the Class Picker and best class guide.
These recommendations are based on class design and early WoW Forever beta information. Class tuning and abilities may still change before launch.
