Play a Hunter if you're not sure: it levels fastest, rarely dies and works everywhere. Pick a healer or tank if you want instant dungeon groups.

Best class for new players
Your pet takes the hits while you attack from range, so you rarely die and spend little time resting. It's the most forgiving way to learn the game.
Fastest class to level
Hunter and Frost Mage are the two S-tier levelers in the beta. Affliction Warlock is close behind once the Voidwalker arrives at level 10.
Best tank
Warrior is the classic main tank, and Forever gives Protection more rage and a baseline Victory Rush. Paladin and Druid can tank too and are easier to level.
Best healer
Priest has the biggest healing toolkit and Power Word: Shield keeps groups safe. Every healer finds dungeon groups instantly, so any of the four is a good choice.
Best for solo and hardcore
On a character you can't afford to lose, escapes matter more than damage. Hunter has a pet tank and Feign Death, Warlock has a Voidwalker and Fear, and Mage has Blink and Polymorph.
Best for farming gold
Frost Mage can pull and kill large groups of enemies at once, and conjured food and water cost nothing. Hunter is the safer option for farming elite areas alone.
