WoW Forever Legacy System Guide

Legacy is WoW Forever's account-wide progression layer. It turns achievement-style goals such as leveling different classes, maxing professions, climbing PvP ranks, and clearing dungeon and raid groups into Legacy Points. Each character then spends those points on small quality-of-life perks. Blizzard's stated aim is to give players a reason to roll alts and revisit Azeroth, without making the perks so strong that new players fall behind.

How the Legacy system works

  • Completing a Legacy Challenge awards 1 Legacy Point to your whole Battle.net account. Points are never consumed: every character sees the same account total.
  • Each character spends points independently in three trees: Adventure, Professions, and Resourcefulness. Your main and your alts can therefore run completely different perks.
  • At launch, each character can spend at most 16 points, even though the account can earn up to 65. Every tree can hold more points than that, so the overall cap is the real limit.
  • Points beyond what you can spend still count. The Legacy Reward Track is based on total points earned and unlocks cosmetics (a toy, a pet, a tabard, and a mount) that you claim from Innkeeper Wiley in Ratchet. These rewards give no power.
  • The system unlocks on your account the moment you earn your first Legacy Point. For most players that happens when their first character reaches level 25. Reaching 150 in a non-gathering crafting profession or exploring the whole world map also works.
  • Open the Legacy window with the shield icon on the micro menu or the default Y key. When a new point is earned, the icon glows. You clear the glow by clicking the completed challenge in the Legacy Challenges tab, not by spending the point.
  • Legacy perks are separate from class talents and don't use talent points. Some perks do interact with talents, though. For example, Talented makes talent points start arriving before level 10, while the 51-point total stays the same.
  • Blizzard has said that future content updates will add new challenges, perks, and possibly new trees, and that the 16-point cap is expected to rise over time.

Best Legacy talents: recommended setups

How to earn Legacy points

  • There are six challenge categories: Classes, Tradeskills, PvP, Adventure, Dungeons, and Raids. Every completed challenge is worth exactly 1 point.
  • Classes are the largest source. You earn points the first time any character of a given class reaches levels 25, 45, and 60, so leveling alts of different classes feeds the account.
  • Tradeskills reward the 150, 225, and 300 skill milestones in the crafting professions. Gathering professions don't count.
  • PvP challenges cover milestones on the classic Honor rank ladder, Exalted reputation with battleground factions, and steps of the Field of Honor season journey. Guides rate PvP among the richest sources for a dedicated player.
  • Adventure covers world feats such as fully exploring Azeroth on one character and finishing a long, notable questline.
  • Dungeons and Raids reward clearing defined groups of instances (tiered dungeon sets, plus raid groups such as Onyxia's Lair).
  • You don't need alts to reach the 16-point cap. Estimates put what one character can earn alone at around 29 points, through leveling, professions, exploration, and PvE.
  • Hardcore (not live at launch) has its own challenge list that replaces PvP. Points earned in Hardcore also count on non-Hardcore characters, but normal-ruleset points don't carry into Hardcore.

Can you reset Legacy talents?

Yes, you can respec. Legacy perks are reset at your class trainer, through the same dialogue option used to unlearn class talents. In the current beta client, a Legacy reset costs 10 gold. It's not yet confirmed whether that price stays flat or rises with repeat resets, as talent resets do. Testers asked Blizzard for a cheap beta-only Legacy respec similar to the temporary 1-silver talent respec, but Blizzard hasn't replied officially. Treat the cost as beta data that may change at launch.

Legacy system FAQ

Are Legacy Points shared between my characters?

Yes. Points are earned and stored on your Battle.net account, and every non-Hardcore character can use the full total. Spending is per character, so spending points on one character doesn't take anything from another. Guides describe the system as account-wide without restricting it by realm or faction, but Blizzard hasn't spelled out cross-realm or cross-faction behaviour in detail.

When do I unlock the Legacy system?

It unlocks with your first Legacy Point. That usually comes from your first character reaching level 25, but reaching 150 in a crafting profession or exploring the whole map also works. After that, press Y to open it.

How do I reset or respec my Legacy points?

Yes. Visit your class trainer and choose the option to unlearn class or Legacy talents. In the beta, this costs 10 gold. Final launch pricing isn't confirmed.

Do I need to finish all 65 challenges?

No. Only 16 points can be spent at launch, and one character can reach that cap alone. Anything beyond the cap only moves you along the cosmetic Reward Track.

Do Legacy perks make my character stronger in raids or PvP?

Barely. Most perks deliberately target convenience: rested XP, travel, gathering, repair costs, buff duration, and Honor and reputation gain. Several, such as Thrill of Adventure, Field Medicine, and High Alert, are switched off in dungeons, raids, or battlegrounds.

What happens to Legacy Points earned in the beta?

Blizzard granted every beta tester 16 points so the trees could be tested without grinding. Nothing official says beta progress carries over to launch, so expect to start from zero on November 4.
