TFT Set 18 Wisps Explained: How They Work and the Best Comps to Climb With
How Wisps work in TFT Set 18 Enchanted Wilds, which Wisps to buy, and the top comps by top-four rate in October.
By TopBuilds Team
Set 18, Enchanted Wilds, introduced a new shop mechanic called Wisps that confuses a lot of new players. Here's how Wisps work, which ones are worth buying, and the comps with the best top-four rates right now.
What are Wisps?
A Wisp is a mystery slot in your shop. You buy it during the planning phase, and it only reveals what's behind it when planning ends. Wisps appear in every other shop, and after Stage 5 every other Wisp is a guaranteed Combat Wisp.
There are seven kinds: Champion, Combat, Shop, Gold/XP, Risky, Item and Misc.
You can only buy a Wisp during planning. When planning ends, the Wisp disappears and shows its reward.
Wisp tips
- Plan around the guaranteed Combat Wisps. After Stage 5, every other Wisp is a Combat Wisp, so you know what to expect late in the game.
- Remember the timing. A Wisp can only be bought during planning, and it reveals its reward when planning ends.
- Treat Risky Wisps as gambles. Their category name says it: the reward isn't guaranteed to be good.
Other Set 18 changes worth knowing
- The Carousel returns and can contain more or higher-cost champions than usual.
- New opening encounters: Completed Item Anvil Start, Reroll Subscription and Item Forge.
- Units no longer retarget after leaving crowd control.
- Missed loot from Stage 4-7 and later PvE rounds can overflow into the next PvE round.
The best comps right now
These are the comps with the best top-four rates in recent board data from October 8. A top-four finish gains LP in ranked.
S tier:
- Executioner Kennen
- Elderwood Gnar
- Executioner Ezreal
- Summoner Kennen
- Juggernaut Maokai (the most played S-tier comp)
Top of A tier: Riftbeast Elder Dragon.
Most played overall: Flora Fatalis Zyra, which is common but doesn't have the highest top-four rate.
Comps to avoid: Solar Kayle and Rival Kha'Zix had the lowest top-four rates on the list.
One detail matters: Ezreal's results depend on the trait you build around. Executioner Ezreal is an S-tier comp, while Elderwood Ezreal is far weaker.
How to climb with the meta
- Pick one S-tier comp and learn it. Kennen has two good variants, Executioner and Summoner, so one champion can be your main carry.
- Stay flexible early. Early items and the first Wisps decide which comp you can reach.
- Don't force low-rate comps. Even a popular comp is risky if its top-four rate is low.
Browse every TFT trait and item to plan builds.
Comp rankings change with every patch. Check the numbers again after the next balance update.
