While leveling

At endgame
Natural Talent: increased magic resistance that scales with your Herbalism skill. It helps most against caster-heavy content and is a good passive for healers and casters.

Elixirs and flasks you use last 100% longer and are 25% stronger. Alchemists also get the Philosopher's Stone trinket. For raiders who use consumables every week, this is one of the biggest personal bonuses in the game.

Leatherworking covers leather and mail while leveling. At endgame, Alchemy's stronger, longer flasks suit raid healers and Elemental Shamans.
Mining and Engineering
Best endgame pair
Engineering uses a lot of ore and Mining supplies all of it. You also get Mining's 5% health bonus. Bombs and gadgets are some of the strongest tools in PvP.
Mining and Blacksmithing
Best for plate wearers while leveling
You mine your own metal, craft your own weapons and armor, and get Repair All plus a Strength camp buff. The extra 5% health makes it a strong tank combination too.
Tailoring and Enchanting
Best for cloth casters
Tailoring needs no gatherer because cloth drops from humanoids, and you find more of it. Disenchant what you craft to level Enchanting, then enchant your own rings.
Best for making gold
Two gathering professions mean you sell everything you collect. You also get both passives, 5% health and magic resistance. You can switch to crafting later, but the new one starts from skill 1.

For leveling: Skinning and Leatherworking. At endgame: Herbalism and Alchemy. Leatherworking covers leather and mail while leveling. At endgame, Alchemy's stronger, longer flasks suit raid healers and Elemental Shamans.
Yes, but if you drop a primary profession and learn another, the new one starts from skill 1. Plan your endgame pair early to avoid leveling a profession twice.
